Voor iedere aflevering reist Kranenborg af naar een andere locatie ergens in de periferie van Europa. In de daar aanwezige levende zangtraditie ontmoet hij een zanger of zangeres die ons het verhaal verteltachter zijn of haar belangrijkste traditionele lied. Het zijn verhalen over grote thema's als dood, liefde, heimweh en vergankelijkheid. Door de vertolking van hun favoriete lied, waarmee iedere aflevering eindigt, komen hun levensverhalen tot leven en worden de grote thema's teruggebracht tot invoelbare dimensies.

Lied van verdriet, genomineerd voor de NIPKOW schijf in 1999, is een serie zeer persoonlijke en intieme portretten van Europeanen. Het laat zien dat in een modern en betrekkelijk klein werelddeel als Europa de diversiteit van uitingen van verdriet d.m.v. liederen enorm is.

 

SONG OF SADNESS

For each episode Kranenborg travels to another location somewhere in the periphery of Europe. In the living sing tradition he finds there, he meets a singer who tells us the story behind his or her most important traditional song. These are stories about large themes like death and love. Through the interpretation of their favorite song, each episode ends with it, their life stories come alive, and the larg themes are beeing reduced to identifiable proportions.

Song of Sadness, nominated for the Nipkow disk in 1999, is a series of very personal and intimate portraits of Europeans . It shows that in a modern, relatively small continent like Europe, the diversity of expressions of grief through songs is enormous.
