Max Velthuijs - Is het leven niet prachtig is een intiem portret over de maker van prentenboeken zoals de internationaal succesvolle boekenserie Kikker. Tijdens het filmen van deze documentaire volgt regisseur Arno Kranenborg de tekenaar tijdens de totstandkoming van zijn laatste kinderboek, Kikker is bedroefd. Doordat Kranenborg toegang krijgt tot het persoonlijke leven van de tekenaar en de zakelijke kant van zijn Kikker-imperium, krijgt de kijker een goed beeld van hoe Velthuijs met veel passie toewerkt naar de deadline van zijn nieuwe boek en hoe de uitgeverijen Velthuijs nauwlettend volgen. Zo reist Kranenborg mee naar boekenbeurzen in Duitsland en Italië en krijgt hij een kijkje in de zakelijke gesprekken die hij met hoge bazen van binnen en buitenlandse uitgeverijen heeft.
Daarnaast spreekt de geestelijk vader van Kikker over zijn opvoeding in Den Haag, zoon Viktor en de toekomst van zijn succesvolle boekenreeks. Ook spreekt Velthuijs openlijk over de scheidingperikelen waarin hij tijdens het filmen van de documentaire verkeerde en zijn angst om hierdoor een deel van de Kikker-rechten te verliezen. Maar men krijgt vooral de schrijver, die in de documentaire tachtig wordt, te zien wanneer hij met veel passie werkt aan de zoveelste prentjes van de over de hele wereld bekende Kikker.
Max Velthuijs - Life is beautiful is an intimate portrait of the author of picture books such as the internationally successful book series Frog. During the filming of this documentary Kranenborg follows the artist during the creation of his latest children's book, Frog is sad. Because Kranenborg gets access to the personal life of the artist and the business side of his frog-empire, the viewer gets a good picture of how Velthuijs is working with great paaion towards the deadline of his new book and how the publishers are following Velthuijs closely during this proces. Kranenborg joines Velthuijs at his trips to book fairs in Germany and Italy and he gets a peek into the business conversations he has with big bosses of domestic and foreign publishers.
Kranenborg talks with the spiritual father of Frog about his upbringing in The Hague, about his son Victor and about the future of his successful book series. Velthuijs speaks openly about the troubles he has with the divorce he goes through during the filming of the documentary, and his fear of losing the copyrights of Frog. But above all one gets to see the writer, who turns eighty in the documentary, working with great passion on the umpteenth images of the world famous Frog.
